Information

Calscape

Calscape was created in conjunction with the California Native Plant Society and UC Berkeley. It is an unparalleled resource for California Native Plants. It’s database is extensive (all the plant links on this site are to their calscape page). Each plant has a description, statics, companion plants, garden requirements, images and, my two favorite features, a map of habitat range (with labeled sightings) and which butterflies and moths that rely on the plant as a host.

The site allows you to search by zip code, to find the plants that grow in your area, which makes focusing on hyper locality in our gardens even easier. You can also search for butterflies by zip code as well to see what is living in your area and what plants you can plant to support them.

There is so much packed into this site, garden planners, information on plant care, a database of landscaping professionals and so much more.

California Native Plant Society

The California Native Plant Society occupies an interesting place in the state’s conservation, in that while it is an enthusiast group, it is also a respected scientific organization. The CNPS created the rare plant ratings for the state and have been instrumental in identifying plant ranges and locations. The state is divided into different regions, and each has a ton of programming which is open to the public. You can find your local chapter here.

Videos

CNPS

The California Native Plant Society has a whole Youtube page of videos covering garden design, maintenance and our native plants roles in conservation.

Waterwise Community Center

This Channel is part of the Chino Basin Water Conservation District, which was created in 1949 to conserve the Chino Water Basin. Part of their mission in replenishing and protecting the aquifer involves promoting native gardens. They have a range of videos, but often focus on specific plant species, and primarily on how they change with summer dormancy. If come August and you are wondering if one (or more than one) of your plants is dead, this maybe a good place to start.

Tree of Life Nursery

During the pandemic, the Native Garden Tour went online. While this was indeed a different experience from the in-person two day action packed garden visiting, it gave an opportunity to listen to the owners and designers talk in depth about the spaces. In 2021 they revisited the spaces in the summer and fall to show how the gardens change with the seasons. The second day features a talk by Doug Tallamy from Home Grown National Park, and author of “Bringing Nature Home”
